Clinical Assessment of Cellulose Tube-Type Tear Test Kit

Abstract
Purpose : To evaluate the clinical usefulness of the tube-type tear test kit (cellulose tube-type tear test kit, Kit-CEL) developed by inserting cellulose filter.

Methods : Sixty two healthy adults who were aged in 20¡¯s without known ocular disease were participated. To analyze the reliability of Kit-CEL, the single examiner conducted the same test three times at a daily interval. Its validity was evaluated by using the SMTube that is currently used in the market. To evaluate sensitivity and specificity of the Kit-CEL test, ROC (receiver operate characteristics) curve were plotted and analyzed. The TBUT (tear break-up time) was measured to screen the dry eye. The AUC (area under the curve) integrated by ROC function was applied to analyzed the accuracy of the Kit-CEL test for dry eye screening and its significance was accepted if p-value was smaller than 0.05.

Results : The reliability of Kit-CEL (0.77) was higher than SMTube (0.43). The sensitivity and specificity of the Kit-CEL for the dry eyes were 74.63% and 50.88%, respectively. The sensitivity of Kit-CEL(32.84%) was higher than SMTube while its specificity was lower than SMTube (82.46%). The Kit-CEL had a moderate correlation with SMTube (r=0.56, p<0.00).

Conclusions : The Kit-CEL had a significant correlation with the SMTube and good sensitivity and reliability value that Kit-CEL could be useful tool for dry eye screening.
